Someone shipped my idea while I was still picking the icon

Had the idea in February. Spent eight weeks on it. Not building it, to be clear. Naming it, buying the domain, three rounds of icon, a landing page nobody saw, and an embarrassing amount of time on whether the onboarding should be three screens or four.

Two weeks ago somebody launched almost exactly it. Uglier than my mockups, missing two things I thought were essential, and doing one thing I had not thought of at all. They have paying users. I have a Figma file and a domain renewal coming up.

The part I keep chewing on is that I was not blocked. Nothing was stopping me building it. I was doing the parts that felt like progress and did not require me to find out whether anyone wanted it.

Going to push back on the framing. Being second is a completely fine place to be, and it is a much better place than most people think.

They have now proved somebody will pay for it, which is the expensive question and they answered it for free. You know what they shipped without. You know the one thing they thought of that you did not. That is a better starting position than you had in February.

The problem is not that they beat you. The problem is the eight weeks, and that problem is still there whether or not they exist.

This. The competitor is not what went wrong here.

The two things you thought were essential and they left out. Were they essential, or were they the reason you spent eight weeks not shipping?

Ask honestly, because in my experience that list is almost always the thing that made the project too big to finish. Mine was offline sync. I was certain nobody would pay without it. Shipped without it, and in fourteen months exactly two people have asked.

One of them was offline sync. I am going to sit with that for a bit.

It is always offline sync or it is always teams and permissions. I do not know why those two in particular eat so many side projects but they do.

Worth adding that "essential" usually means "essential for the user I imagined", and the imagined user is generally a more demanding version of yourself.

Icon rounds are the tell. Nobody does three rounds of icon on something they are afraid will fail, because you cannot fail at an icon.

Practical suggestion since everyone else is doing the therapy. Give yourself a rule that nothing gets a name until it has a user. I mean one actual person who is not you and is using it.

Sounds arbitrary and it works, because naming is the moment a project becomes a Thing you can be publicly wrong about, and everything after that gets slower.

The domain purchase was definitely the moment it became real in the bad way. I remember feeling great about it.

Did you ever show the landing page to anyone or was it live but unlinked

For what it is worth I have 40-odd of these in a note and have built two. The 38 are not failures, they are just notes. The mistake is treating a note like a debt.

Renew the domain, it is nine quid and it will annoy you for years otherwise.
