This is the honest version, not the lawyer version: everything AskMeAnything stores about you is listed below. We do not sell data, we do not run ads, and there is no third-party analytics or tracking script anywhere on the site.
If you sign in
Signing in is Google or GitHub only. From the provider we receive and store:
- Your account id at that provider: The stable identifier that lets us recognise you next time. It is not your password and cannot be used to access your Google or GitHub account.
- Your email address, Used to match your account if you later sign in with the other provider, and to identify site administrators. We do not send marketing email.
- Your avatar image URL and display name, Shown on your profile and next to your posts. You can change the display name and clear the avatar in settings.
We never receive your password, your contacts, your repositories or anything else from the provider.
What you create
Your username, posts, answers, votes, saved posts, room memberships, follows and notifications are stored so the site can work at all. Posts and answers are public by design - that is the point of a public Q&A community. Votes are private: nobody can see who voted on what, only the totals.
Cookies
- Session cookie (
ama_sess): A random opaque id, set only after you sign in. The session record itself lives in Cloudflare KV and expires after 30 days of inactivity. Signing out deletes it on both ends. - Visitor id (
ama_vid): A random id with no personal data in it, used to rate-limit anonymous posting and to let moderators spot a flood coming from one source. It never leaves this site and is not shared with anyone. - Preferences (
theme,locale): Remember your light/dark choice and your language so the page does not flash the wrong one.
There are no advertising, analytics or cross-site cookies. That is the complete list.
Anonymous posts and your IP address
When something is submitted anonymously we store a one-way hash of your visitor id combined with your IP address - never the IP itself. The hash cannot be reversed back into an address. It exists for one reason: so a moderator reviewing the queue can see that fifty submissions came from the same source without ever learning who or where that source is.
Infrastructure
The site runs on Cloudflare (Pages, D1, KV and R2). As with any web host, Cloudflare processes the requests that reach the site and keeps its own operational and security logs under its policies. We do not run our own analytics on top of that.
Turnstile, Cloudflare's CAPTCHA alternative, may be shown on submission forms to block bots. It is privacy-preserving by design and does not track you across sites.
Retention and deletion
Account data is kept while the account exists. Sessions expire on their own. Rate-limit counters expire within hours. If you want your account deleted, write to us from the address on the contact page and we will remove the account and detach your posts. Content other people have already replied to may stay up with the author removed, so the conversation still makes sense.
Children
The site is not intended for people under 13, and accounts belonging to children under that age will be removed.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes with it and the change is announced on the site. Questions about any of it: contact us.
