Is it acceptable to climb a popular route without a rope while others are around?
Our group had a disagreement at the crag today. A friend climbed a route without a rope that everybody else was climbing on a top rope. Another party objected, fairly strongly.
My own position is uncomfortable. I was not happy watching it, and I also think people are entitled to accept their own risk in an activity that is entirely voluntary.
Where I am unsure is the "while others are around" part. Does the presence of other people change the ethics, and if so, why?

The presence of others changes it, and the reason is that the risk is not entirely self-contained, which is where the personal-autonomy argument runs out.
What gets externalised:
None of that means the activity is illegitimate. It means "my risk, my choice" is an incomplete description of the situation, and the objection you heard was probably about the incompleteness rather than about the choice.
