Buying a first bike at 200 cm and around 210 kg — what actually needs to be different?

I want to start riding for cardio. I am 200 cm tall and I fluctuate somewhere around 200 to 220 kg depending on what I am training for. I do strongman work so the weight is not going anywhere quickly and I am not looking for advice about that.

What I would like to know is what genuinely needs to be different about the bike. Every manufacturer lists a weight limit and I am over most of them. I do not know which of those limits are real engineering constraints and which are warranty paperwork, or which components are the ones that will actually complain first.

    The honest short answer is: wheels first, and everything else is secondary.

    A stated weight limit is mostly a warranty boundary rather than a cliff edge — a frame does not fail the moment you exceed it. But wheels are different, because they are the component where rider weight translates directly into a load that either the rim and spokes carry or they do not.

    What you want is a hand-built wheelset from someone who builds for load: a deep, strong rim, a high spoke count — 36 spokes, and 40 exists for a reason — with straight-gauge spokes and even, high tension. Factory wheels with 24 low-count bladed spokes are built for a 75 kg rider and they will go out of true, then break spokes, then fail.

    This is the single item most worth spending money on, and it is the one most shops will not raise unless you ask.

    One practical suggestion: find a shop that builds wheels in-house and talk to the person who builds them rather than to a salesperson.

    This is a build, not a purchase off a rack, and the difference between a shop that engages with that and one that sells you the biggest frame they stock is enormous. The right shop will happily discuss spoke count and tension; the wrong one will tell you the weight limit is fine and hope.

      Talking to the wheel builder is the best advice in the thread. Everything else on the bike can be swapped later; a wheelset built wrong will have you back within a month.

    The rest of the list, roughly in the order it will annoy you:

    • Tyres and pressure. Go wide — 40 mm or more. A wider tyre at a sensible pressure carries load with far less risk of pinch flats, and comfort matters more at your weight than at anyone else's.
    • Frame size and geometry. At 200 cm you are past the top of many manufacturers' ranges. Some brands do genuinely large frames; otherwise you are looking at custom, which is less exotic than it sounds and solves both problems at once.
    • Seatpost and saddle rails. Common failure point. A stout post at the right length, and steel rails rather than carbon.
    • Brakes. Disc, not rim, and larger rotors. You have more energy to dissipate on every descent than the design case assumed.
    • Gearing. Lower than a standard build. This is about being able to keep cadence on a hill rather than grinding, which is what protects your knees.

    Steel or aluminium frame rather than carbon, and a touring or trekking bike rather than a road bike, gets you most of this by default.

    The category to search for is touring or expedition bikes, and the reason is directly relevant: they are engineered for a rider plus a substantial load of luggage.

    A touring bike rated for a total system weight of 150 kg or more is designed around exactly the loads you represent — it is just that the designers assumed 90 kg of rider and 50 kg of panniers rather than all of it being you. Strong wheels, wide tyres, low gearing, robust everything, all standard rather than special order.

    Tandems are the other place to look. Tandem components are built for two riders on one frame, so tandem-rated wheels and drivetrains carry loads nothing else in the catalogue does.
