Can you actually hard-boil an egg in a vacuum flask?

I want to cook a single egg with minimal effort and no dedicated gadget, and without watching a pan.

The idea I keep coming back to is putting the egg in a vacuum flask with boiling water and leaving it. My attempt produced an egg that was warm and clearly undercooked in the middle, so something about the energy budget is not working.

Is this feasible with the right ratio and timing, or is the approach fundamentally short of heat?

    It works, and your failure was an energy budget problem exactly as you suspected. The arithmetic is worth doing because it tells you the fix.

    An egg is roughly 50 millilitres and starts cold. The water in the flask is the only heat source, and it gives up heat to warm the egg. The temperature they settle at is a weighted average, roughly by volume.

    With a small amount of water and a cold egg, that equilibrium lands well below what is needed to set the yolk. With half a litre of boiling water to one egg, the drop is small — the mixture settles a few degrees below boiling, comfortably in cooking range — and a good flask holds that for a long time.

    So the fix is: much more water relative to the egg, a properly preheated flask, and time. Rinse the flask with boiling water first and discard it, otherwise the flask itself absorbs a substantial share of your heat.

    Worth knowing what each part of the egg needs, because it explains why partial results look the way yours did.

    Egg white sets at a lower temperature than yolk. So a flask that settles in the middle of the range gives you a fully set white and a yolk that is soft or liquid — which is a perfectly good soft-boiled egg and not what you asked for.

    If the yolk was still runny, your equilibrium was in that window. More water, hotter start, longer time, and it moves up.

    One food safety note: this method sits the egg in warm water for a while, which is fine when the temperature is high. If your ratio is poor and the water settles somewhere lukewarm, that is not a good place to leave food. Err towards more boiling water rather than less, for two reasons rather than one.

    The other lever is starting temperature and time.

    Take the egg out of the fridge first, or run it under warm water for a minute. A room temperature egg needs noticeably less energy from the water, and it is also less likely to crack.

    Give it longer than you think. The flask method is gentle — the water is below boiling and there is no agitation — so it takes considerably longer than a rolling boil. Twenty to thirty minutes rather than ten, and there is no real penalty for leaving it longer since the temperature is dropping rather than rising.

    That last point is the appeal of the method: it is genuinely hard to overcook. The temperature falls slowly, so an egg left an extra fifteen minutes is fine, where the same in a pan gives you a grey ring.

    One practical warning: put the egg in gently and consider not using your best flask.

    Dropping an egg into a narrow glass-lined flask is a good way to chip the liner, and a flask with a cracked liner loses its insulation permanently. Lower it in on a spoon, or use a steel-lined flask for this.

    Also, the egg may crack from thermal shock if it goes straight from fridge to boiling water, which brings you back to warming it first.
