I put a nail into a wall and hit a cable — the lights flicker when I move it. What should I do right now?
I was fixing something to a wall and the nail seems to have gone into a cable. Pulling it back makes the lights in the room go out; pushing it back in restores them.
I have left it in place for now and I intend to get it repaired properly. What I want to know is what precautions to take in the meantime, and whether leaving it as it is until someone can come is acceptable.

To be concrete about the sequence:
If the circuit that went dark also feeds something you need — a fridge, a medical device — run an extension from a different circuit rather than switching it back on.
