Same hotel three nights a week for a year: what to negotiate and what makes it bearable

Work put me in one hotel, three nights a week, for a year. The stay is a solved problem once you stop treating each week as a separate trip.

Ask for these, they are usually free on a long booking

  • The same room, or at least the same floor and side. Ends the nightly reorientation and it is the single biggest change.
  • A room away from the lift, the ice machine and the road. Ask by number, not by adjective.
  • Storage between stays. Many places will hold a case, which means you stop packing toiletries and gym kit every week.
  • Housekeeping only on one specified day. Fewer strangers in your things and the room stays as you left it.
  • A desk and a second lamp. Hotel rooms are lit for sleeping and it is worse for your mood than you expect.

What made the difference
Bring three things that make a room yours: your own pillowcase, a small speaker, and something with a smell you associate with home. That sounds precious and it was the most effective thing I did.

What did not help
Upgrading. A bigger room is the same problem with more floor. And trying to make each week feel like a trip, which is exhausting by month two.

Ask by room number, not by preference. "Somewhere quiet" gets you whatever is free; "room 412 or the same side of that floor" gets you 412 most weeks, because it is easier for them to say yes to something specific.

Also worth asking the front desk directly rather than the booking system. The system cannot make these promises and the person on the desk usually can, especially once they recognise you.

A year of similar and the thing that fixed it was not the room, it was having somewhere to go at seven. A gym, a class, a regular restaurant, anything with a fixed time.

Without it I ate in the room and the evening evaporated. With it the hotel became somewhere I slept rather than somewhere I lived, which is the correct relationship to have with a hotel.

Storage between stays is the one I would tell anyone first. Going from a weekly full pack to a laptop bag changed the whole thing, and I only found out it was possible in month five because I never thought to ask.
