Do leopard geckos eat less in winter?

Four year old male, had him since 2023. Since the clocks went back he has gone from six or seven crickets twice a week to refusing everything for about a fortnight. He is still out at night, eyes clear, poops normally on the rare occasion he does eat, and the tail looks as full as it ever did to me. The flat is colder than it was in August but I have not changed the mat or the thermostat.

So is this the season, or am I talking myself out of a problem because the season is a convenient answer?

Get a kitchen scale that reads in grams and weigh him the same day every week. Write the number down somewhere you will not lose it.

That one habit answers the question you are actually asking. A healthy adult in a seasonal slowdown holds his weight more or less flat for weeks. A gecko that is losing weight needs a vet whatever the month is. Two weeks off food on a steady number is a season. Two weeks off food on a falling number is not, and nothing about the behaviour you described tells the two apart.

Weighed him out of curiosity, 61g. Which I have no way of reading without something to compare it to.

It is not that number, it is the next four. 61 is unremarkable for an adult male. What matters is whether it is still roughly 61 next Sunday and the one after. You now have a baseline, which is more than you had this morning.

Before you accept the seasonal explanation, measure the warm side surface with a probe or an infrared gun. Not a stick-on dial, they are decorative.

They need surface heat to digest, and a mat that was holding 31C in a warm flat in August can be sitting at 25C in a cold one in October with nothing having failed and no setting having changed. Appetite follows the warm spot down. Mine brumated two winters running and it turned out to be the room both times.
