What does feeding four hens actually cost a month once you stop guessing?
Four hybrid layers, a covered run, and a 20kg sack of layer pellets that I keep buying without ever noticing how long it lasts. I want a real monthly figure before I add two more birds, including whatever people spend on grit, oyster shell and the treats they pretend they do not buy. I do not free range them so nothing is coming from the garden. What are you actually spending, and did anything you changed move the number?

Before you change feed, look at how much of it is not going into a hen. I had an open trough and was losing a genuinely embarrassing amount to billing out, spillage and rats at night. A treadle feeder cost me about 60 and my sack went from lasting four and a half weeks to lasting seven with the same four birds. That paid for itself inside a season and the rat problem stopped at the same time.

Same experience, though it took my two slowest birds about three weeks to learn the treadle. Prop it open for the first fortnight or you will find one hen has quietly stopped eating.
