What actually counts as building in public — revenue screenshots, a changelog, or narrating your day?
I see the phrase used for three completely different practices and I cannot tell which one people mean when they say it worked for them. One person posts a monthly revenue chart, another posts a changelog entry every Friday, and a third just narrates whatever they did that afternoon. I have 45 minutes a week for this and one product with about 60 users, so I get to pick one format and stick to it. Which of the three did you actually do, and what came back from it?

None of the three, as stated. The version that has ever worked for me is publishing a decision with the reasoning attached: here is what I was choosing between, here is the data I had, here is what I picked and why, and later, here is whether I was wrong. A revenue chart with no decision behind it is a number, a changelog is a receipt, and narration is a diary. All three become interesting the moment they are attached to a choice someone else is also facing, because that is what makes a stranger stop and reply. At 45 minutes a week you can write exactly one of those a fortnight and it will outperform daily narration.

This is also the format that ages well. My decision posts still get read a year later, the numbers posts are worthless the week after.

A decision with the reasoning attached is a much clearer instruction than post your progress, and it also tells me when I have nothing to post.
