Is this burnout, or was it undiagnosed ADHD the whole time?
I'm 34, eight months of feeling completely flat, can't start tasks I care about, and I forgot two meetings last week that were in my calendar. I took two weeks off in April and felt human for about ten days before it came back identically, which is what makes me doubt the burnout explanation. The assessment waiting list I've been quoted is fourteen months. For people who've been on both sides of this — what actually distinguished them for you?

I have both diagnoses, so here's the question that untangled it for me: does it have a childhood? Burnout has an on-ramp — you can usually point at the year things changed and the load that changed them. The ADHD side of my life had school reports from age nine saying the same things my manager was saying at 31. The other half of the answer is that they stack: masking ADHD in a job that doesn't suit you is expensive every single day, so a lot of people arrive at burnout precisely because of undiagnosed ADHD, and treating only the burnout leaves the engine running. None of that is a diagnosis and a checklist can't give you one either.

The childhood question was the one that landed for me too. Two weeks off fixed my exhaustion and did absolutely nothing for my inability to start things, which had been true since I was twelve.
