Does a car actually use less fuel when the tank is full, or is that one of those things people repeat?
Heard this again at the weekend and could not argue either way.
The claim, as it was told to me: keep the tank full, because a fuller tank means less air in it, which means less evaporation and better economy. The counter-claim, from the other person at the table: a full tank is heavier, so it costs you fuel to carry it.
Both arguments sound reasonable and they point in opposite directions, which usually means at least one of them is doing something dishonest with the size of the effect.
So:
- Is the weight of the fuel a real factor in ordinary driving?
- Is the evaporation thing real, and does it affect economy or just emissions?
- Is there any actual reason to prefer keeping a tank full or letting it run low?

Both effects are real, both are far too small to notice, and the reason to care about tank level is neither of them.
Weight. A 50-litre tank of petrol is about 37kg. On a 1400kg car that is under 3% of the mass, and you are comparing full against half-full, so call it 18kg — about 1.3%. The rule of thumb is roughly a 1% economy change per 2% mass change in mixed driving, so the honest figure is well under 1%, and it is zero at steady motorway speed where aerodynamic drag dominates and weight barely matters. You could not measure this without a test track.
Evaporation. Sealed since the 1970s. Fuel vapour goes into a charcoal canister and is drawn into the engine and burnt. The vapour is not lost, so there is nothing to save. Whoever told you that is quoting a real phenomenon from an era when tanks vented to atmosphere.
So question 1: technically yes, practically no. Question 2: the mechanism exists, the loss does not.

The canister detail is the bit I did not have. So the advice is not wrong so much as fifty years out of date, which explains why it is stated so confidently — somebody's father was right about it.
