Dealer keeps steering me to a monthly payment when I want a total price, how do you hold that line?
I have a pre-approval from my own credit union in my pocket and a trade-in worth maybe a third of the car. Every conversation so far has come back to what I want to pay a month, and every time I ask for one out-the-door number I get a payment instead. I am not trying to be adversarial, I just want to compare two dealers on the same basis. What has actually worked for people, and is holding out for the total number as important as everyone online says?

Do it by email and the problem largely evaporates. I contacted five dealers with the same message: this exact specification, please send me your out-the-door price including every fee, I will buy from whoever is lowest this week. Two ignored it, one replied with a payment, and two sent actual numbers. The gap between those two numbers was substantial on a car of that price, and I bought from the lower one without ever negotiating face to face. Email also gives you the number in writing, which matters when you get to the desk and the figure has drifted.
