Is it normal that only half my week is billable and the rest is admin Admin & Taxes
Eight months freelancing full time. I track everything and I'm averaging about 19 billable hours out of a 40 hour week. The rest is proposals, invoicing, email, calls that go nowhere, and fixing my own website. I keep reading about people billing 30+ and I can't work out whether they're lying, working 60 hour weeks, or doing something I'm not. What's a realistic number after a few years?

A few things that moved my number by maybe four hours a week: batch invoicing to one afternoon a month, a proposal template with three fixed packages so writing one takes 20 minutes not two hours, and refusing to redesign my own site more than once every two years. That last one is the biggest and I say it as someone who has broken it twice.

Everyone does it. It feels like work and it's the only project where you're the client, which is exactly why it never ends.

I have rebuilt my portfolio site twice this year. Called out entirely.
