Why does a home espresso machine cost more than my washing machine? Espresso

Genuinely asking rather than complaining. A washing machine has a motor, a pump, a heater, a drum, a control board and a door that has to survive twenty years of being slammed, and it costs less than a mid-range espresso machine that heats a small amount of water and pushes it through a puck. I am trying to work out which parts of the price are engineering and which are the fact that people who buy espresso machines will pay. Currently on a $200 machine that makes acceptable coffee, so this is curiosity, not a purchase.

    Volume is most of it. Washing machines are made in the millions per model across a decade of a stable platform; a mid-range espresso machine is a production run in the tens of thousands with brass and copper parts machined rather than stamped. Then add that the thing has to hold water at a stable temperature under nine bar of pressure, repeatedly, in a domestic kitchen, and that the tolerance for temperature drift is a couple of degrees. It is a small pressure vessel with an opinion.

      The materials point is underrated. Brass boilers and group heads exist partly for thermal mass and partly because they can be machined in small runs. An aluminium or plastic equivalent is cheaper to tool but worse thermally, and that is exactly the difference between the sub-$200 machines and the ones that cost four times as much.

      The volume argument only stretches so far, though. Kettles are also small runs by comparison to washing machines and they cost nothing. The pressure and temperature requirement is doing more work in this explanation than the production run is.

    Terse: small production runs, brass, and a tolerance measured in degrees. Your washing machine is allowed to be wrong.

    Some of it is absolutely the buyer. There is a well-populated segment where the machine is furniture — polished steel, a badge, a shape — and the internals are shared with something half the price. The way to see this is to look up which parts the manufacturer sells as spares. If two machines take the same pump, boiler and group, you are looking at a housing difference.

    Partly disagreeing with the engineering-explains-everything answers. Plenty of expensive machines are expensive because the category is aspirational and the buyer is comparing to café prices rather than to appliances. Both things are true at once — the physics is real and the margin is also real, and which one dominates depends entirely on where in the range you are looking.

    The comparison that actually clarified it for me: a washing machine is allowed to take an hour and be within a few degrees. An espresso machine is asked to deliver about 25 seconds of output within a couple of degrees and within a fraction of a bar, on demand, from cold-ish, in a kitchen with unknown water. The precision requirement is the cost, not the parts list.

    Also worth pricing in the repair economy. Washing machines are largely disposable at year eight; a decent espresso machine has a parts diagram, and a shop will rebuild the group and replace the boiler seals for a fraction of a new machine. Some of that premium is that you are buying into a serviceable product rather than a sealed one, which is not nothing when you compare cost per year rather than sticker.

      This is why the cheap end can be the false economy. My $180 machine had no parts diagram at all and the failure was a moulded plastic assembly that is not sold separately. It was a $180 three-year rental.
