Is it normal for a new foam mattress to smell like chemicals for three weeks Experience

It arrived rolled up in plastic and had a strong smell straight out of the box, a bit like a new car mixed with something sweeter. Three weeks later it is much fainter but I can still notice it when I get into bed at night. The room has a window I open daily. I do not know whether to be patient or to be worried, and every page I find on this is trying to sell me a different mattress.

Three weeks fading is within the normal range. The smell is off gassing from the foam and the packaging, and most of it goes in the first few days, with a long tail after that. Mine took about a month before I stopped noticing it, and I only noticed at all because I was looking for it.

What actually speeds it up is airflow across the surface, not time. Strip the bed, stand a fan blowing across the mattress for a few hours a day, and keep the window open. Heat helps too, so a warm room with airflow beats a cold room with airflow.

What does not help: covering it with a thick waterproof protector immediately, which traps the smell in and slows everything down.

The fan is the tip that actually worked for me. Left one on low pointed across the bare mattress while I was at work for three days and the smell dropped off a cliff.

Also worth taking any zipped cover off and washing it if the manufacturer allows. A lot of the sweet part of the smell is in the fabric rather than the foam.

The thing I would pay attention to is not the smell itself but whether you have symptoms. If you are getting headaches, a scratchy throat, or sleeping badly and it lines up with the mattress, do not tough it out for months on the internet's advice. That is worth a conversation with a doctor and worth checking your return window, because most companies have a trial period and it is far easier to use it at week four than at week ten.

For what it is worth, no smell at all and a fast fade is more common with foams carrying a recognised low emissions certification, which is worth looking for next time.

Agreed on the return window. Mark the date on a calendar now. People spend the trial period hoping and then discover it ended a week ago.

One data point: two foam mattresses in this house, one was gone in four days and the other took nearly six weeks. Same brand, different model. The denser the foam, the longer it seems to take, which lines up with there being simply more material to release.

Small practical thing: if you can, unbox it in a spare room or a garage for the first 48 hours rather than in the bedroom you sleep in. Most of the total emission happens in that window and you can just not be in the room for it.
