Bernoulli or Newton for explaining lift to a curious eleven year old Physics

My niece asked how planes stay up and I have about ten minutes and a kitchen table. Every explanation I find either says air goes faster over the top so pressure drops, or says the wing throws air downward. I do not want to teach her something she has to unlearn at sixteen. Which do I lead with, and is there a demo I can do with things in a normal house?

    Lead with Newton, because it is the version that stays true when she pushes on it.

    A wing pushes air downward and the air pushes the wing upward. That is the whole thing. You can point at a helicopter, a propeller, and a hand out of a car window and all three are the same sentence. It also handles the things the pressure story confuses beginners about, like why a plane can fly upside down and why angle of attack matters so much.

    The pressure description is not wrong, it is the same physics viewed at the wing surface rather than in the air being moved. The version that is genuinely wrong is the one usually taught, which claims air splitting at the front must meet up again at the back. It does not, and the air over the top actually arrives sooner.

    Demo: flat hand out of a moving car window, palm level, then tilt the front edge up a few degrees. Her arm gets shoved upward and she can feel the air being pushed down. Ten seconds, no equipment, and it is the real mechanism.

      Name the equal transit story as a myth explicitly, otherwise she meets it in a textbook at fourteen and decides you were wrong. I tell kids the air over the top gets there first and is in a hurry, which is memorable and also true.

      Agreed on leading with deflection. The two pictures have to agree because they are the same conservation laws, but only one of them survives being explained badly.

    One warning about the classic paper strip demo where you blow over a strip of paper and it rises. It is a bad demo for this. The paper is curved and drooping, and the moving air you supply is not comparable to the still air underneath, so it does not show what people claim. Kids who try it later with a stiff flat card get nothing and conclude the adult lied.

      The spoon under a tap is in the same category. It shows something real about a jet clinging to a curved surface, but it is not a wing, and presenting it as one causes more confusion than it clears.

    If you get longer than ten minutes, folding two paper planes with different nose weights and throwing them down a hallway teaches more than either explanation. She will discover angle of attack, stalling and trim by herself in about fifteen throws, and then the words have something to attach to.

    For an eleven year old I would finish with the honest bit: both stories get used by real engineers, they describe the same thing from different angles, and the one you hear most in school is usually told slightly wrong. Kids like being shown where the disagreement is. It makes the subject feel alive rather than finished.
