AI chat free tiers cut me off after a handful of messages — rolling window or a fixed daily clock?
Hit a cap twice this week on two different assistants, and neither told me how long I had to wait or how many I had left before it happened. One let me back in after what felt like a couple of hours, the other seemed to reset overnight. Has anyone actually measured how these windows behave, or is it deliberately unknowable so you upgrade?

Worth saying before anyone measures too carefully: these caps change without announcement, sometimes weekly, and often differ by region, by whether you're signed in, and by which model the request lands on.
I kept a note of what I'd measured for one provider and it was wrong within a month — not slightly wrong, half. So measure to learn the shape of the window, don't build a routine around the exact number, and definitely don't build anything automated on top of an undocumented free tier.

That explains why the answers I found from a few months ago all contradicted each other and each was stated confidently.

Every one of those was probably true when written. Undocumented quota posts have a shelf life of about six weeks.
