Loose curls, medium density. In the shower and for maybe ten minutes after, they are perfect — defined clumps, no frizz. By the time they are dry it is a halo of fuzz and the clumps have separated. I am using a leave-in and a gel, and scrunching. Somewhere in that window it goes wrong and I cannot work out where.
You are disturbing it while it dries, and the fix is to stop touching it entirely until it is bone dry with a hard cast. Apply product to soaking wet hair, not damp. Scrunch once. Then do not touch, do not fluff, do not check — the gel needs to form a shell, and every touch before that breaks a clump permanently. Once fully dry, scrunch the cast out with a little oil on your palms.
Which is why a diffuser matters more than any product here. Low speed, medium heat, hover until about 80 percent then let it finish — 20 minutes for me instead of three hours. The longer it stays damp, the more time the cuticle has to swell.
How long is bone dry realistically? Mine takes hours air drying.
Humidity. Above a dew point of roughly 16C, hair pulls water from the air, the cuticle lifts, and everything you did in the shower comes undone. Glycerin heavy products are wonderful in one season and a disaster in the other, which is why the same routine flips on you.
The glycerin thing took me years to notice. Same product, gorgeous in April, unusable in August.
Try a microfibre towel or a cotton t-shirt instead of terry, that was my entire problem.

Check that your gel actually has hold. A lot of curl creams sold as defining have almost no film former in them and will not hold a clump through a full dry. If it never goes crunchy, it is not holding anything.
