Cancelling cloud photo storage for a self-hosted box, does the maths work once you count drives and your own time

The Saturday a month is real but it is front loaded, not recurring. Setup, getting the reverse proxy and certificates right, working out the mobile apps, and doing one deliberate restore test is a couple of weekends. After that mine wants maybe twenty minutes a month for updates and a glance at the backup log. The restore test is not optional, and it is the step everyone skips: an untested backup is a strongly held belief rather than a backup.

The partner requirement is the actual specification and everything else is detail. Before you buy a drive, install the software you are considering, put a hundred photos in it, and have your partner use it for a fortnight on their phone with you saying nothing. If the app is slow to upload in the background, or logs them out, or does not handle a poor connection, you will find out now for free rather than after you have cancelled the subscription and moved 900GB. That test has killed two migrations for me and saved me both times.

Do the maths honestly and it usually still works, but only if you count the backup. Self hosting replaces the sync and the app, it does not replace the offsite copy, and a cloud provider was quietly giving you that for free. So the real comparison is your box plus two drives plus an offsite backup target, against the subscription. The mini PC you already own is close to free to run, an N100 idles low enough that the electricity is a rounding error at any normal tariff, and the drives are a one off. The subscription you are cancelling then has to cover a backup service instead, which is cheaper than the photo plan but not zero.

I did exactly this, and eight months later I am paying for both. Not because the self hosted side failed, it has been solid, but because I wanted a copy in someone else's building that does not depend on me, and once you accept that you are already paying something. What changed is that I dropped to the cheapest cloud tier and use it purely as a backup target rather than as the thing anyone touches, which cost less overall and means a house fire is not a family archive event.

Two drives mirrored, one offsite copy, and one restore test before you cancel anything. Do it in that order and the rest is easy.
