Whole-house dehumidifier versus two portables: which did you regret less? Dehumidifiers
Quoted just under USD 2,600 installed for a ducted whole-house unit, against roughly USD 500 for two decent portables I could put in the basement and the upstairs hall. Three-storey house, forced air already in place, and the problem is a sticky second floor in summer plus a basement that smells after rain. I am not short of the money but I am allergic to paying four times as much for something I cannot move. Anyone run both and have a view?

Two portables, three years, and the thing that wore me down was not the noise, it was the maintenance surface area. Two coils to clean, two buckets or two hoses, two units to lug up stairs in October, two things that fail in different ways. Whether that is worth USD 2,100 to you is a personal question but it is the actual trade rather than the pint ratings.

The lugging is the part that decides it in the end. Two units means two trips up the stairs twice a year, and it is somewhere around year three that people start pricing the ducted one seriously.
