App Shortcuts disappeared from Spotlight after updating to iOS 26.6 — how do I tell whether it is the index, a per-app setting, or the app itself? Search & Spotlight

Updated a few days ago and the sub-actions under each app in Spotlight are gone.

What I mean precisely: I type an app name, the app itself comes up and launches fine, but the little list of actions that used to sit under it is not there. Search is otherwise fine — files, mail and contacts all come back normally.

One thing I noticed and cannot explain: if I open an app once, by hand, its actions come back for that app. Instagram had nothing, I opened it, went back to search, and its actions were there. So it is not that the feature is gone.

I restarted, and I waited — someone told me the index rebuilds and to give it half an hour. It has been days.

What I am trying to work out before I do anything drastic:

  1. Is there a way to tell whether this is the index still catching up versus something that will never come back on its own?
  2. Is "open the app once" the actual fix, or a coincidence that means something worse?
  3. Which of the Siri & Search toggles actually govern this, as opposed to the ones that only affect suggestions?

iPhone 15 Pro, updated over the air, not restored from a backup. Storage is about half full, so this is not a space problem.

"Open the app once and its actions come back" is not a coincidence, and it is the most useful thing in your post. It tells you which half of the system is broken.

App Shortcuts are declared by the app, not built by the system. The app ships a list of actions, and the system has to have that list registered before it can offer them in search. Launching the app is what causes it to register. So what you are describing is a device that lost the registry and is rebuilding it one app at a time as you happen to open things.

That rules out the two explanations people usually reach for first. It is not that the actions were removed from the app, because they come back untouched. It is not the per-app search switches either, because those would not be repaired by launching.

The practical consequence is unglamorous: the apps you use will fix themselves within a week or two of ordinary use, and the ones you rarely open will stay empty until you open them. If there are three you actually want back today, open those three and stop worrying about the rest.

Agreeing, with one correction to the timing advice people keep repeating.

"Wait 20-30 minutes for the index to rebuild" is folklore borrowed from full-text search behaviour, where it is roughly true. The action registry is not that. It is not on a timer at all, so waiting days does nothing by itself, which matches exactly what you found. That is why the half-hour advice worked for the person who told you and not for you: they probably opened things in the meantime.

If you want to speed it up without opening apps one by one, background refresh and a night on the charger will get some of them, because apps that wake up in the background can register too. It is not reliable enough to promise, but it costs nothing.

To answer your third question directly, because the settings screen is genuinely confusing and the labels do not mean what they look like.

Settings, then Apps, then the app, then the Siri & Search section. There are usually three switches:

    • Learn from this App — feeds usage into suggestions. Turning it off does not hide the app.
    • Show App in Search — whether the app itself is a search result. Off here and the app vanishes entirely, which is not your symptom.
    • Show Content in Search — the app's own indexed items: a note, a conversation, a saved recipe.

The thing you are missing is not on this screen at all. There is no per-app switch for App Shortcuts. That is why toggling these has done nothing for anyone who tried it, and why every thread about this ends with somebody insisting it worked for them and nobody able to reproduce it.

So: check that Show App in Search is on, because it is worth ten seconds, and then stop looking at that screen.

Worth separating two things that both get called "the index" here, because you will get contradictory advice otherwise.

The content index — mail, messages, files, anything inside an app — genuinely does rebuild on its own, genuinely can take hours after a large update, and genuinely does behave better after a night plugged in and on wifi. If your problem were that one, waiting would have fixed it.

What you have described is not that one. Your ordinary search results are fine. Only the app-declared actions are missing. Those are two different mechanisms that happen to appear in the same list on screen, which is a UI decision that has cost a lot of people a lot of evenings.

So you can stop waiting. Waiting is the right treatment for the other illness.

One question before you accept that the update caused it: did anything else happen in the same week? A restore, a transfer to a new device, a storage cleanup, or an app offload.

I ask because offloaded apps behave exactly like what you are describing. The icon stays, search still finds the app, tapping it downloads it again — and until it has been launched properly it has nothing registered. If you have Offload Unused Apps switched on and the update pushed you near the storage line, a batch of apps can get offloaded at once, and the result looks like the update ate your shortcuts.

Settings, General, iPhone Storage will show offloaded apps with a small cloud on the icon. Cheap to check and it would explain why launching each one fixes it.
