What actually moved the number for you: a script, or having somewhere else to go? Negotiation
Every guide I read gives me the same three phrases about anchoring and enthusiasm, and I have used them twice and got nothing but a repeat of the original figure. Both times I had no competing offer and I was fairly obviously keen. Public sector background moving into a nonprofit operations role, so the bands are tight and genuinely published. I want to hear from people whose number moved and what they think caused it, rather than another list of phrases.

From the hiring side: the phrasing matters far less than whether the person on the other end has room and a reason. Room means the requisition was approved with a range and you are not already at the top of it. Reason means either a competing option or something specific you bring that the level does not assume. When I could not move base I could often move a signing amount, a start date, a title, or a review at six months instead of twelve, and candidates who asked about those got them far more often than candidates who kept pushing base.

The six-month review is a real lever and it is also the one most likely to evaporate when your manager changes. Get it in the offer letter or treat it as a nice sentence.

Nobody ever mentions the six-month review as an option. It was the only thing that moved in my last offer and it never appeared in a single guide I read.
