product hunt slot is booked for tuesday and i am in europe - does 12:01am pacific actually matter

12:01 PT lands at 9am for me, which is fine. What I am trying to work out is whether the first hours genuinely matter enough to clear my whole day, or whether I schedule it, do normal work, and show up around noon Pacific when the Americans wake up.

Solo, no team to hand it off to, small list (about 600 emails).

The leaderboard day resets at 12:01am Pacific, so anything you post later is competing against products with a head start inside the same 24 hour window. That is the whole reason for the silly hour - it is not superstition, it is just that the window is fixed.

You do not need to press a button at 12:01, you can schedule it. What you do need is to be awake and answering comments in the first several hours, because comment depth is a real input now and because the people who arrive early are the ones who write something you can actually reply to. At 9am local you have the easy version of this problem. Spare a thought for the Americans doing it at midnight.

Seconding the comments part. Most of my traction came in hours three to eight, which is dead time in the US, purely because I was awake and answering every single comment with something specific rather than 'thanks so much!'. The generic replies get you nothing; a real answer about how the thing handles someone's exact case gets you a thread.

Mild disagreement with organising the day around the ranking at all. The rank is mostly a function of how many people you can already reach, which is the exact thing you are launching in order to get. If your list is 600, use launch day as an excuse to send that list a real email and to message the 40 people who replied to you in the last six months. The directory listing is the pretext, not the channel.

Set expectations on the size of the prize. Finishing top of the day generally takes upvote counts in the high hundreds to low thousands depending on how brutal that particular Tuesday is, and the traffic is a single spike that decays within about 72 hours. For a B2B tool it converts poorly - lots of browsers, few buyers.

What you actually keep afterwards: a durable backlink, a badge you can put on the page, a few hundred emails if you have a capture, and a handful of genuinely useful comments. Plan around keeping those four things and you will not be disappointed by the ranking.

One practical warning: vote soliciting is the thing that actually gets you in trouble. Votes coming in from a group chat where you asked for them, or from accounts created that morning, count for very little and can get the whole launch discounted. Freshly created accounts are weighted lower than established ones.

Worth drawing the line clearly though, because people get scared of the wrong thing. Telling your newsletter, your customers and your followers that you launched today, with a link, is completely normal and everyone does it. What is not fine is trading upvotes, buying them, or running a group whose purpose is reciprocal voting.

Schedule it, sleep normally, be at your desk for the first four hours you are awake, and treat every comment like a support ticket. That is the entire playbook.

Prep everything the night before, and I mean everything, because you will not be thinking clearly. Gallery images exported and checked at small sizes, your first maker comment written and edited in a text file ready to paste, tagline under the character limit, and - this is the one that got me - actually click through your own pricing page and signup on a phone. Mine 404'd on mobile for the first ninety minutes of the busiest traffic day the site ever had.
