Does contest maths actually help with a maths degree, or is it a separate sport?

I am 17 and school has started putting me in front of olympiad-style papers on Saturday mornings. I enjoy them, but they eat the hours I would otherwise spend on the syllabus, and two people have told me university maths looks nothing like a contest problem. If you did both, did the contest work pay off later, or was it a hobby you had to unlearn?

    Did national-level contests, then a degree, and the honest split is this: the specific tricks transferred almost not at all, and the tolerance for sitting with one problem for ninety minutes without knowing whether it is solvable transferred completely. That second thing is most of research and nobody teaches it in a syllabus. The tricks you can drop without regret.

      The stamina point is the one nobody says out loud. My first year of proof-based work was mostly discovering that being stuck for an hour is the normal state and not evidence you should quit.

    In my cohort of roughly 120, maybe eight had done serious contest work. They were visibly ahead for one term and indistinguishable by the end of the second year, except that they were less rattled by hard problem sets. The people who ended up strongest were the ones who read ahead and asked questions, contests or not.

    Different sport, same muscles. Contests reward speed and cleverness; a degree rewards patience and bookkeeping. Do the contests because you like them, and do not let anyone tell you they are preparation.

    I will push back on the top answer. Pigeonhole, induction dressed up as a construction, generating functions, extremal arguments - I used all of those in combinatorics and graph theory modules and I already had them in my hands while everyone else was meeting them cold. It depends heavily on what you specialise in, and it is a real advantage in discrete areas.

      Fair, and I would concede combinatorics entirely. In analysis and algebra I got no measurable head start from contest technique, which is where most of a first year lives.

    I did it backwards: I spent two years on contests, coasted on the syllabus, and turned up to university with beautiful problem-solving instincts and terrible algebraic hygiene. I dropped signs, I could not integrate cleanly, and my first term was spent on things I should have drilled at 16. Keep the boring practice going alongside.
