Six weeks before calculus starts, review algebra or just start calculus Resources
I placed into Calc 1 for the autumn but I last did algebra properly about seven years ago. I have roughly six weeks and can give it 45 minutes a day, not more, because I am working full time. Do I spend that on a precalc review, or do I start reading ahead in the calculus book and patch the gaps when I hit them?

Targeted algebra review, not a whole precalc course. Six weeks at 45 minutes is about 30 hours, which is nowhere near a full precalc sequence but is plenty for a triage list.
The things that actually sink people in Calc 1, in the order they will hurt you:
f(g(x))for chain rule laterIf you can do those five without hesitating, you are ready. Skip conic sections, skip matrices, skip most of the trig identity zoo.

Saving this. Composition is the one I would not have thought to review.

Composition and the unit circle are the two that make chain rule week miserable if they are shaky. Everything else you can look up mid problem.
