Commuting into a city centre and parking in a public bay, and carrying the helmet into every shop and office is getting old. The bike has a helmet lock loop under the seat but leaving a EUR 400 helmet dangling in the rain feels bad in two different ways. A top box is EUR 200-ish plus mounting. What pattern do people settle into after a year or two of this?
I use the under-seat lock plus a cheap waterproof cover and it's been fine in a mid-size city for three years. The thing to understand is that a helmet lock stops the opportunist walking past, not anyone with intent, because a strap takes seconds to cut. It's a deterrent and it should be priced like one.
And someone can slash the liner for fun without stealing anything, which happened to a colleague. Whether that's a real risk depends entirely on where you park.
A lot of workplaces will let you leave it in a locker or behind reception if you ask once. Solved my problem for free after a year of assuming the answer would be no.
The one nobody says out loud: you cannot tell whether an unattended helmet has been dropped or interfered with. That's my actual reason for carrying it, not theft.
Top box changes how the bike handles more than people expect once there's weight in it, especially at motorway speed. Worth a short loaded ride before you decide you love it.

Carried it for two years, bought a top box, and I'd tell anyone commuting daily to skip straight to the box. It isn't only the helmet: gloves, a jacket liner, shopping, all of it stops being a problem at once. The mounting cost stings once and then never again.

The "and everything else" argument keeps coming up. I've been pricing it purely as a helmet solution, which it isn't.
