Keeping a UK life with no fixed address — the GP and 'proof of address' walls keep stopping me
UK citizen, mix of house-sitting and a van, no tenancy anywhere. I have been using my parents' address but they are moving in the autumn and I would rather not build my whole administrative life on somebody else's post. I need to register with a GP in a place I am actually near, keep vehicle insurance valid and honest, and stop being asked for a utility bill I will never have. What has actually worked for people doing this at home rather than abroad?

On the GP specifically: the published NHS guidance in England is that you do not need proof of address or immigration status to register with a practice, and a practice cannot refuse you solely for lacking a fixed address. The gap is between the guidance and the receptionist, and I have been turned away by two practices before being registered without fuss by a third. Print the relevant page, be polite, and ask them to record the refusal reason if they say no. It is genuinely a case where knowing the rule is most of the battle.

Asking for the refusal in writing changed the answer for me on the spot, without any confrontation. I suspect it is often a front desk assumption rather than a practice policy.

Two refusals then success on the third matches what a friend described. I had assumed the first no was the answer.
