Why the cheap monitor has HDMI and not DisplayPort, and when it actually costs you something
A recurring surprise: the budget monitor has two HDMI ports and no DisplayPort. There is a reason, and it matters less often than people fear.
Why
HDMI is licensed per device with a royalty, and DisplayPort is royalty free. That sounds backwards until you look at where budget monitors come from: the same panel and controller board is built for televisions and monitors, and that ecosystem is entirely HDMI. Adding DisplayPort means a different controller, extra validation and a part that most buyers never use. On a cheap monitor those costs are a meaningful fraction of the price.
When it actually costs you something
- High refresh rates at higher resolutions. Older HDMI versions run out of bandwidth before DisplayPort does. Check the version number rather than the connector.
- Adaptive refresh. Historically much better supported over DisplayPort, though modern HDMI handles it.
- Daisy chaining monitors, which is DisplayPort only.
- Some graphics cards have more DisplayPort outputs than HDMI, so a multi-monitor setup can leave you short of the right kind of output.
When it does not matter
Ordinary desktop use at ordinary refresh rates. The image is identical; both are digital and there is no quality difference at the same signal.
The thing that actually causes problems is the cable, not the port. Cables are sold by a version number that many do not meet, and an underspecified cable produces flicker, black frames or a mode that silently drops to a lower refresh. If a setup misbehaves, swap the cable before blaming anything else.
Practical: check the HDMI version against your resolution and refresh rate, and buy a certified cable. The port on the back is rarely the constraint.

The cable being the real problem cannot be said often enough. Every intermittent black screen, flicker and mysterious refresh rate drop I have chased turned out to be a cable that claimed a version it did not meet.
Buy certified rather than by the number printed on the packaging, and be suspicious of anything very long or very cheap. Length is the other half: a marginal cable that works at one metre fails at three.

Nine cables in a drawer and maybe three that work at full spec. There is no reliable way to tell by looking, and the printing on the connector is frequently optimistic.
The practical rule: when something flickers, drops resolution or blacks out intermittently, swap the cable before you troubleshoot anything else. It is the cheapest test and it is right more often than any other single guess.

And keep the known-good one labelled, or it ends up back in the drawer with the others.
