Switched brands on the recommendation of a friend, bought the big bag because it was on offer, and she ate two mouthfuls and walked away. That was a week ago and she has not touched it since. The bag is open, obviously, and I have the receipt. Is it worth going back to the shop or is opened food simply mine forever now?
Go back with the receipt and the bag and ask, because plenty of chains run a satisfaction guarantee on food specifically for this and they do not advertise it loudly. I have had two refunds and one store credit over the years, all on opened bags. Policies vary by chain and sometimes by the manager standing in front of you, so be pleasant and be specific about what happened.

Before you write the food off, consider that two mouthfuls and a walk away after a straight swap is normal cat behaviour rather than a verdict on the food. A change is usually done over about a week, starting at roughly a quarter new to three quarters old and moving across gradually. Cats in particular fixate on the texture and shape of what they know, and an abrupt swap gets refused on principle.
Almost certainly. Mine rejected a food for a fortnight and then ate it happily once it arrived mixed into the old one over ten days.
I did not transition at all, I just filled the bowl with the new stuff. That is probably the whole problem.
If the shop says no, your local shelter or rescue will almost always take an opened bag, and some run a food bank for owners who are struggling. It is not a refund but it is much better than a bin, and they tend to be genuinely grateful for a large bag of anything decent.
Buy the small bag when trying anything new, every time, even when the big one is on offer. The offer is not a saving if the cat votes against it.

I would push back a little on going to the shop first. Email or use the contact form on the manufacturer's site, because the brands frequently send a voucher or a refund for a first-time buyer who did not get on with it, and they would rather keep you than win the argument. Two brands have done that for me and one sent a coupon worth more than the bag.
