Sign up bonus never posted eight weeks after I hit the spend Card Question

Hit the spend requirement with about three weeks to spare, confirmed by adding up the statements, and two full statement cycles have now closed with no bonus. Nothing in the account messages, no email. Before I ring them and sound like an idiot, what are the usual reasons this happens and what should I check first?

Check these four before you call, in this order.

    1. What does the spend window actually start from, account opening or first statement? Those differ by up to a month and it is the most common miscount.
    2. Did anything get refunded or disputed during the window? Refunds usually subtract from the qualifying total.
    3. Do fees, interest, balance transfers or cash advances count? Usually not, and people include them by accident when they add up statements.
    4. Are you excluded by a previous bonus on the same or a related product? Those rules are often written as once per lifetime or within a set number of years, and the application will still let you apply.

If all four are clean, call. Most bonuses post one to two statements after the qualifying spend posts, so eight weeks with two cycles closed is late enough to ask about without feeling silly.

That will be it. Spend the difference now if the window is still open, and if it has closed, call anyway and ask, some agents will honour it once you explain.

Number two, of course. I returned a 340 dollar jacket in week six and never connected it to this.

Keep a simple spreadsheet from now on with the application date, the exact terms pasted in, the spend deadline and the running total. Takes five minutes per card and turns this exact question into a thirty second check. I keep mine in a single sheet with one row per card going back years.

Use the secure message centre rather than the phone for the first contact. You get a written record with a timestamp, which matters if you have to escalate later, and the person answering messages is usually looking at the same screens as the phone agent. If the answer is unsatisfactory, then call.

And screenshot everything before you contact them. Statements, the original offer page if you can find it, the date you applied. Offer terms get taken down and then it is your memory against theirs.

One more possibility that is not on most lists: some issuers post the bonus only after the account has been open a minimum number of days, regardless of when you hit the spend. Hit it fast and you wait anyway.
