Which free VPN tiers are usable, and which ones are quietly selling me? VPN
Student, genuinely cannot spend money on this right now, and I need something for a shared flat network where the router is run by a landlord who has admin on it. I mostly want the flatmates and the router owner not to see which services I use, not to hide from anybody serious. I installed two free apps from the store and both wanted an unreasonable pile of permissions, so those are gone. Is there a free tier that is funded by something other than me?

Worth checking whether you need a VPN at all here. Encrypted DNS plus HTTPS already hides most of what you are worried about from the router owner, and a lot of routers show only IP addresses in their logs anyway. Turn on encrypted DNS in your browser first, see what is left, then decide.

Partly right, but the IP addresses and the certificate handshake still leak the destination. If the goal is specifically "the person with the admin password should not build a picture of my day", the tunnel does something the browser setting does not.
