Six months of a side service and every customer came from one friend Getting Clients

I do small bookkeeping cleanups for sole traders. Nine clients so far, and eight of them trace back to one friend who keeps referring me. She's not going to have infinite contacts. I've tried posting in local business groups and got nothing — a few likes, no enquiries. What actually works for getting the first customers who don't know anyone I know?

Go where the problem is already being described out loud. For bookkeeping cleanups that's accountants — specifically small practices who take on a new client, open the books, find a mess, and don't want to spend chargeable hours untangling it. Ring five local practices, say exactly that in one sentence, offer to do one at a reduced rate so they can see the work.

One accountant who trusts you is worth about thirty local Facebook posts. And the referral is warm in a way that a group post never is, because it comes with implied vetting.

They're the opposite. Most small practices actively don't want the low-margin tidying work, they want a clean set of books to file from. You're removing their least profitable hours.

This didn't occur to me at all — I'd been thinking of accountants as competitors.

Local business group posts fail because you're advertising to other people who also want to sell things. Try the reverse — answer questions in those groups for a month without ever pitching. People will DM you. It's slow and it works.

Can confirm. Took about six weeks of just being useful before the first enquiry, then three in a fortnight.

Also, ask your friend directly and specifically. Not 'let me know if anyone needs help' but 'do you know two people running a shop or trade business who've fallen behind on their books?' Vague asks get vague results. Specific asks get names.

Nine clients from one referrer is actually a strong signal, not a weak one. It means your work is good enough that someone stakes their reputation on it repeatedly. Worth asking each of those nine for one introduction — you have social credit with them you're not spending.

Small thing that helped me: a one-page description of what a cleanup actually involves and what it costs, as a PDF. People forward a document. They don't forward a conversation.
