Sunscreen pills into little white balls over my moisturiser every morning Sunscreen

Same two products for a year with no problem. Since adding a hyaluronic serum underneath, my sunscreen rolls into little rubbery balls within a minute, worst around my nose and forehead. Waiting longer between layers helps slightly but doesn't fix it. Do I lose the serum or is there a technique here?

Pilling is a layering problem, not a product quality problem, and there are three levers.

Wait time first. Most people give it 30 seconds and a humectant serum needs three to five minutes to actually absorb rather than sit as a film.

Quantity second. Hyaluronic serums are the worst offender for over-application. Four drops does nothing more than two.

Third, stop rubbing the sunscreen in. Press and pat it on in sections. The rolling is your fingers shearing the layer underneath.

If all three fail, that specific pair is incompatible, usually a silicone-heavy sunscreen over a gel, and swapping one is the fix.

Patting instead of rubbing plus a proper three minute wait basically solved it. I was doing the whole routine in about ninety seconds.

Getting dressed between steps is the low-effort version of the wait. Serum, get dressed, sunscreen, brush teeth, done.

Hyaluronic acid on properly dry skin in a dry heated room can also feel tight and sit on the surface instead of absorbing. Applying it to damp skin and sealing with the moisturiser, rather than layering on dry, makes a real difference to whether it goes anywhere.

Blunt option: you probably don't need the serum. Hyaluronic acid works by holding water at the surface and a decent moisturiser is already doing most of that. I dropped mine and noticed nothing except that my sunscreen stopped pilling.

Harsh but not wrong. The number of routines that would improve by removing a step is very high.

Also scan for film formers. Anything with a carbomer or an ingredient ending in crosspolymer high in the list tends to roll under almost anything, and they turn up in serums and primers constantly.
