Flight lands at 11:40pm and my hostel is across town, how do I handle arrival Safety
First long solo trip and the only affordable flight gets in just before midnight. The hostel is about 35 minutes out and the reviews mention the street being quiet at night. I've read enough about airport taxi scams to be nervous but I also don't want to burn a night's budget on a hotel by the terminal. What do people who do this regularly actually do?

Book the first night at somewhere near the airport or somewhere with a genuine 24 hour desk, and treat it as part of the flight cost. That is the whole answer, and I have never once regretted it.
If you're set on going into town, the things that actually reduce risk:
The scam you're worried about is mostly a money scam, not a safety one. The bigger real risk is being exhausted and disoriented at 1am with a big bag on a quiet street.

Booked the airport hotel. Forty euros, and reading this back the maths of "save forty, arrive wrecked and lost" was never good.

The plate-before-name thing is the one people skip. If a driver asks "are you Bri?" anyone standing there can say yes. You should be the one confirming their details.
