Single supplement adds 40 percent to a nine day trip, any way around it Budget

Looking at a nine day guided walking trip and the solo price is about 40 percent above the per person double. The operator says they can pair me with a roommate but can't guarantee it until two weeks out, and if they don't find one I pay the supplement anyway. That's a lot of money to gamble on. Has anyone found a reliable way to avoid this?

Ask three specific questions before you book anything:

    • if no roommate is found, do you waive the supplement or do I pay it
    • how often did that happen on this exact departure last year
    • do you have any departures with a guaranteed no-supplement policy

Some operators waive it, some cap it, some quietly have one or two departures a season marked solo-friendly. The published price is often not the only price. Also, booking a departure that's already half full improves your odds of a match enormously — ask how many are booked.

Asked. They waive it on two shoulder season departures and one of them works for me. Saved about 600 by sending an email.

Shoulder season is where all the solo deals live, for the obvious reason that they need bodies. Late September walking is also usually nicer than August.

Run the alternative properly before you decide. Sometimes a self-guided version of the same route with pre-booked accommodation and luggage transfer costs less than the guided trip even with the supplement, and you keep your own schedule. Sometimes it doesn't. It's twenty minutes of spreadsheet work.

Did that comparison. Self-guided was cheaper but the guided one includes two transfers that would be a nightmare alone, so it roughly evened out.

Small operators are far more flexible than big ones because a human reads your email. I've had one put me in a triple with two other solos at no extra cost simply because I asked whether that was possible.

The supplement is annoying but it isn't a scam. The hotel charges for the room, not the head, so the operator genuinely eats the difference. Once I understood that I stopped being irritated and started shopping for operators who absorb it as a marketing choice.

Just book it and complain at the end, they usually refund part of it.
