How much does daily sunscreen actually matter if I'm indoors most of the day? Face

I work in an office with a north-facing window and I commute in the dark half the year. I've been buying a GBP 22 sunscreen out of guilt and using maybe a third of the bottle before it expires. I'm trying to work out whether this is a genuine daily thing or whether I'm being sold a routine. Not chasing anti-ageing miracles, I just want to know whether the indoor case holds up.

The honest version: UVB barely gets through standard window glass, UVA gets through considerably more. So the indoor argument isn't zero risk, it's much less risk than the bottle's marketing implies. I wear it on days I'm outside at lunch and skip it on genuine dark-commute winter days, and my dermatologist shrugged at that plan.

That's roughly the compromise I was hoping was defensible. Thank you for not just telling me I'll regret it in twenty years.

It's also not a moral test. Exposure is cumulative over decades, so one skipped Tuesday in November is noise.

I switched to keeping a cheap one in my bag purely for outdoor lunches and weekend walks, and dropped the morning ritual on desk days. Six months in, the only difference I've noticed is that I stopped resenting it, which is why I'm still doing it at all.

This is the pattern that survives for most people I know. Ritual-based routines break, trigger-based ones ("I'm going outside") don't.

If you're using a third of a bottle before it expires, the GBP 22 is the problem rather than the habit. Buy something at GBP 8 that you'll apply generously, because underapplying an expensive SPF 50 gets you meaningfully less than the number on the label.

Countering slightly. I have a family history that makes me cautious, and my dermatologist was firm that daily is the right call for me specifically. Which is really the point: how important has a different answer depending on your skin, your history and your latitude, and none of us know yours.

One practical thing: check the expiry date. If you're finishing bottles late, buy smaller ones. Mine used to go off before I got any value out of them and the texture changes noticeably before the date does.
