Daily-commute laptop backpack that isn't a black rectangle with forty pockets Bag Question
Bike or train five days a week, 16" laptop plus lunch plus a spare shirt. Budget $120-200. My current bag holds everything and makes me look like I'm about to abseil into the office. I've ruled out the ultra-minimal roll-tops because I've watched two colleagues get water in through the roll on a bad morning. What survives daily use, keeps the laptop dry, and doesn't read as tactical gear?

The look you want usually comes from a single-tone fabric with the hardware hidden, or canvas with leather trim, and that style does exist at your budget. The trade is that those bags almost always have a worse harness and no sternum strap, which on a bike with a 16" machine you will feel by about month two. At $200 you get the look or the carry, not both. Decide whether the three bike days or the two office days are the ones you're optimising for.

Then buy for the bike and stop worrying about it. I promise nobody in your office is grading your bag.

Bike days are three of the five. I might be buying the wrong bag for the wrong days.
