Trip is in nine weeks and my passport expires roughly four months after the return date. I keep reading about a six month rule but also that it does not apply everywhere. Renewal is currently quoted at six to eight weeks in my country which is uncomfortably close. Do I risk it or start the renewal now?
Start the renewal now, today. Nine weeks against a six to eight week quote is not a comfortable margin, and processing times get worse with no warning at busy times of year.
On the rule itself, there is no single global rule. Some countries want six months of validity beyond your date of entry, some want three months beyond your intended departure, some only require it to be valid for the stay. The airline checks at the desk because they are the ones who have to fly you home if you are refused entry, and desk staff apply the strictest reading rather than the correct one.
Check two sources, the destination country's own immigration or foreign ministry site, and your airline's document requirements page. Do not rely on a forum answer, including this one, because these rules change.
Applied this morning. The point about desk staff applying the strictest reading is what tipped it, I do not want to argue rules at 5am.
You will never win that argument either. They are not empowered to make exceptions and the queue behind you is not on your side.
Two smaller things while you are renewing. Blank pages matter in some places, typically one or two facing pages, and a passport that is technically valid but nearly full has caused people problems. And if you have a visa or an electronic travel authorisation tied to the old passport number, renewing may mean redoing it, so check that before you assume the renewal solves everything.
If your country offers an expedited service, price it out now rather than in week eight when it becomes an emergency. It is usually a modest fee compared with rebooking a whole trip.

Also check the countries you transit through, not just the destination. A layover that involves clearing immigration puts you under that country's entry rules too, and people plan around the destination and get stopped in the middle.
