I've done it twice now. Both machines sit open in front of me, both use the same headset via a USB switch, and in a hurry I hit unmute on the wrong window and start talking into the wrong meeting. Nothing sensitive got said either time but it was a bad thirty seconds. There must be a physical setup that makes this impossible rather than merely unlikely.
Wallpaper. Sounds daft, works instantly. Solid dark blue on one, solid rust on the other, and set the browser and terminal themes to match. Peripheral vision catches colour before it catches window titles.
Can confirm. I did this after nearly dropping a table in the wrong console and I've never mixed them up since.
Separate keyboards too, not just separate audio. A KVM feels tidy until you paste something into the wrong window, which is a much worse version of the same accident and one you might not notice for an hour.
This. I ran a KVM for four months and the near miss that ended it was a clipboard, not a microphone.
Also worth checking whether either machine is set to auto-join meetings or to auto-unmute on join. Some corporate conferencing rollouts turn that on by default and it removes the one moment where you'd have noticed.
One rule that has served me well: never let hardware belonging to one employer touch a network path controlled by the other. No sharing a VPN, no tethering machine A through machine B, no shared cloud drive as a scratch space. Two separate stacks that never meet, even when it's inconvenient.

Stop sharing the headset. That's the whole problem. One machine gets an over-ear headset, the other gets on-ear or an earbud, and you can tell which one you're wearing without looking.
Then make the mute physical on both. An inline mute button on the cable or a headset that mutes when you flip the boom up means your hand knows what it did. Software mute in a window you can't see is how this happens.
Last bit: only one laptop is ever centred in front of you. The other lives at 45 degrees on the left. Your body learns the geometry within a week.

Add a cheap USB light on the machine that's live if you want belt and braces. Green means this one is the meeting. Costs about the same as lunch.
