Moved countries with two suitcases and a new office dress code, what do you buy first?
New job is business casual, the climate here has four real seasons, and I own jeans, t-shirts, one coat and a pair of trainers. I have roughly 1500 to spend over about six months and I would rather not blow it in the first fortnight on things I later hate. What I want is the order of operations rather than a shopping list, because I have read a hundred lists and none of them tell you what to buy in week one versus month four.

Buy for the next eight weeks only, then stop and reassess. Whatever season you are in right now is the only one you can actually judge fit and comfort in, and the six month plan will change once you have seen what people in your office genuinely wear. My order was two pairs of trousers that fit properly, one pair of shoes that are not trainers, three tops, and one layer for the office temperature. That is a full working fortnight and it cost well under a third of the budget.

Trousers by a distance. Shoes you can try on and know in ten minutes. Trousers you find out about on day three of actually sitting in them.

Eight weeks is a much less frightening horizon than six months. Did you find shoes or trousers the harder thing to get right?
