I record short product walkthroughs at my own desk, always in the same seat, always alone, and the camera is about a metre away. The wireless kit keeps getting recommended to me and I cannot see what it does for someone who never moves. Budget is around USD 200 and I currently use a USB mic that sounds fine but is visible in frame, which is my only real complaint. Am I buying mobility I will not use?
For a fixed desk shot, yes, mostly. The thing that kit solves is getting a microphone close to a moving person without a visible boom, and you have neither problem. What you actually want is to get the mic out of frame, which is a stand or an arm and about twenty dollars, not a radio system. That said, a clipped transmitter is genuinely invisible on camera in a way that no desk mic is, so if the frame matters more than the money it is not a stupid purchase.
Second the arm. Boom in from behind and above, aimed down at the mouth from just outside the top of frame, and the mic disappears while getting closer than a desk stand ever does.
And the arm keeps working when the batteries in the wireless kit are flat, which is the failure mode nobody plans for.
Spend the two hundred on treating the corner behind the camera instead and record with what you own. That will change how the walkthroughs sound more than any mic swap at this distance.
Wireless lav on a bare desk in an untreated room can also sound worse than a good wired mic, because a lav sits on your chest picking up the room and rubbing on fabric. It is a compromise made for a reason, and at one metre you have no reason.
Clothing rustle is the thing that ruins more lav recordings than any technical spec. Tape, loops, and still one take in ten is bin material.
Bought one for a use case exactly like yours and I do not regret it, but the reason is not audio quality. It is that I stopped having to think about the mic at all: clip it on, it records to itself as a backup, and I never touch a cable. That convenience is worth something if you record often, and nothing if you record twice a month.

The numbers on that kit are genuinely impressive for what it is: the transmitters are around ten grams, the quoted line-of-sight range is four hundred metres, and the whole system does something like forty-eight hours of runtime with the charging case. None of which matters at one metre in your own bedroom. Buy it for interviews and walk-and-talks, not for a static desk.
