Grass over the drainfield is bright green and squishy two days after rain Septic
The strip over the trenches has been noticeably greener than the rest of the lawn all summer, and since a heavy rain on Tuesday it squelches when you walk on it. No smell that I can detect and nothing is backing up inside the house. Tank is 1200 gallons, four of us, and the previous owners left no paperwork so I have no idea when it was last pumped. Should I be calling someone now or waiting to see if it dries out?

Before the inspection, go find your toilets and check for a silent runner. Put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern, wait 20 minutes without flushing, and look in the bowl. One leaking flapper can push hundreds of gallons a day into a system that would otherwise be fine, and it's invisible until someone tells you to look.

This found ours. Two of the three toilets were seeping and the field went back to normal within a month of fixing them.
