Three quotes to drill a new well and they are wildly different — what makes one job cost double the next?
Rural lot, no municipal supply available, and the neighbours on both sides say their wells came in somewhere around two hundred feet. The quotes cover different things as far as I can tell, and one of them is per foot with no total at all. I need to understand what the line items should be before I pick, because right now I am comparing three documents that do not describe the same job.

The clause that matters most is what happens on a dry hole or a low-yield well. Some drillers charge full per-foot rates regardless of what they find, some have a stated depth beyond which pricing changes, and a few will move and try a second location under defined terms. That is the difference between a predictable bill and an open-ended one, and it is the question I would ask before price. Get the answer written into the contract rather than agreed on the phone.
