First house with a septic system, moved in eight months ago. The previous owner says he pumped it every five years and the neighbour says every two, and the county leaflet says three to five. Two adults, no garbage disposal, front loading washer, one bathroom. Is there a way to tell where in that range I actually sit, or do I just pick a number and hope?
The two variables that move that number most for a small household are laundry volume and whether anything goes down the drain that shouldn't. A front loader helps because it uses far less water than a top loader, and no disposal helps a lot. Wipes marked flushable are the single fastest way to turn a five year interval into an emergency.
Also worth spreading laundry across the week rather than doing six loads on a Saturday. A big slug of water in one day pushes solids toward the outlet before they've settled.

When you do get it pumped, be there and ask them to show you the baffles and tell you the condition. That's the visit where you find out whether your outlet baffle is broken, which is the failure that quietly sends solids into the drain field and costs thousands. Twenty minutes of standing in the garden being nosy is the best value in the whole system.
Skip the additives. Every year someone at the hardware shop tells me a monthly enzyme packet means never pumping, and every septic professional I've asked has laughed. A healthy tank already has what it needs, the solids still accumulate and still have to leave in a truck.
Agreed. The only additive-adjacent thing I'd say matters is going easy on bleach and antibacterial cleaners in large quantities, since dumping a lot at once isn't doing the tank any favours.
Also find and mark the lid locations properly now, with a photo and a measurement from a fixed corner of the house. Doing that in August with a coffee is a lot nicer than doing it in February with a shovel and a problem.

You don't have to guess, you can measure. Have it pumped once now to get a known starting point, then check the sludge depth yourself annually with a stick and a rag, or with a cheap sludge judge tool: you're looking at the depth of solids at the bottom and scum at the top, and the rule of thumb is pump when solids reach about a third of the tank depth or when the scum layer is within a few inches of the outlet baffle. For two adults on 1000 gallons with no disposal, four to five years is a very common real answer, but measuring costs you an hour a year and takes the argument away entirely.

Just be sensible about it, don't lean over an open tank, don't go in one ever, and put the lid back properly. Otherwise it's a five minute job.

I didn't realise checking it yourself was even an option, I assumed you needed the pump truck to know. That's exactly what I wanted.
