195 angry reviews of authenticator apps: two of them are about price, seventy five are about being locked out

I went into this review pull expecting authenticator apps to be a story about paywalled backup. That is what everyone says, and it is wrong. Out of 195 low star reviews, 2 mention price. The mass is somewhere else.

Sign in and lockout: 75. Crashes: 25. Backup and sync: 22.

The lockout ones have a shape that would be funny if it were not the whole product. "It wants a code from the authenticator in order to sign in to the authenticator." People locked out of the thing whose job is to let them in.

Device loss is the other half, and it is worse. "Opened it in the morning with seventeen tokens and they were all gone, Service List Is Empty." "Phone stolen, broken, dead? You are finished."

Then the pile I did not expect and which belongs in this room. Reviewers describing seeds ending up in a cloud backup without a clear prompt and without end to end encryption, and one describing an app passcode that simply stopped being asked for after a delete and restore. I cannot verify any individual claim from a review, and I am not naming apps for that reason. What the pile does establish is that people cannot tell where their seeds are, and the apps are not telling them.

Which is a product opening rather than a complaint. In this category the thing to compete on is not features, it is a legible answer to "where exactly does this live, and what happens when this phone dies".

The circular lockout is not really the app's fault, though. If your account recovery depends on the second factor and you have no recovery codes, the design has failed you long before the app opens. People do not print recovery codes, and every provider knows it.

Agreed on where the fault sits, but the review lands on the app anyway, and it is the app that can fix it. Prompting for an offline recovery path during setup costs one screen and moves the whole failure mode.

Yes, and doing it at setup is the only moment the person still has access. Every prompt after that is talking to somebody already locked out.

Setting a passcode on an authenticator only helps if it survives a reinstall, and one of those reviews suggests it does not.

Once, yes. Monthly, no. It is a utility that should keep working when the company stops existing, and a subscription is the wrong shape for that promise.

Two of 195 on price is the finding here. Whole category, and the thing everyone assumes is the friction is barely mentioned. That means a paid authenticator is viable in a way the received wisdom says it is not, provided it earns the money on the recovery story.

Service List Is Empty. Three words, seventeen accounts, one very bad morning.

Worth adding the small ones from the same pile because they are cheap and they repeat: no search when you have forty entries, no way to delete a dead token, no way to reorder. Nothing dramatic, just an app that gets worse the longer you use it correctly.

Would you actually pay for an authenticator?
