Can you leave budgies alone for a week?

Two budgies, both about three, healthy as far as I know. I have a week away booked in November and no family nearby. I have been looking at automatic feeders and one of those big gravity water bottles, and on paper it looks like it would cover seven days.

I would rather be told I am wrong now than find out afterwards. Is a week with the right kit actually workable, or is that a thing people say online and not a thing people do?

You are wrong, and the reason is the one nobody expects. Budgies eat the seed and leave the husk, and a bowl full of empty husks looks exactly like a bowl full of seed from more than a foot away. A bird can starve next to what appears to be a full dish.

That alone kills the plan, because the failure is invisible and nobody is there to blow across the top of the bowl. Add water that gets food dunked in it and pooped in within a day or two and you have two problems by Tuesday of a seven day trip.

The husk thing had genuinely never occurred to me. Is that what the automatic feeders are meant to solve?

They are meant to and they do not reliably. Mine clogged on day two of a long weekend with seed sitting above the jam looking perfectly stocked. If a feeder fails on day two of your week, they have nothing for five days and you find out when you get home.

Somebody in daily is the answer, and it is better than boarding because they stay in their own cage. Give the sitter an actual list rather than a general instruction: blow the husks off and refill the seed, change the water, offer the veg if that is the routine, and look at both birds long enough to see they are active and eating.

Leave your avian vet's number and say out loud that they should ring it rather than wait for you to land.
