Is it normal for my conure's beak to peel?

Pineapple conure, three. Thin flaky layers coming off the surface of her upper beak, like a fingernail peeling. It is not dramatic and the beak looks normal in shape and length.

She destroys wooden toys at an impressive rate and eats fine. Is flaking just what beaks do, or is it a sign I should be looking at her diet, which is honestly more seed than it should be?

Light flaking is normal and your fingernail comparison is the right one: the beak is covered in keratin that grows continuously and wears away, so old layers shed. Chewing on wood and toys helps that along, which is why your toy-destroying bird has visible flakes.

The reassuring picture is thin small flakes with a beak that is otherwise smooth, symmetrical and a normal length, on a bird that eats and chews normally. That is what you have described.

So the seed diet is a separate issue rather than the cause of this?

One firm rule regardless: do not trim or file her beak at home unless an avian vet has shown you how on that bird. It is easy to cause pain or bleeding and there is no version of this where a worried owner with nail clippers improves matters.

Keep the chew toys coming, wood and cardboard and natural materials, and vary the perches with some natural wood. That is the maintenance.
