My 7 km commute leaves me wrecked and takes far longer than the map said — is it me or the bike?
I decided to start commuting by bike. The route is about 7 km and the mapping app suggested around 25 minutes. In practice it takes me closer to 45 and I arrive genuinely exhausted, which is not what I expected from a fairly flat city ride.
The bike is a single-speed I bought second hand because it looked simple and low maintenance. It feels heavy to get moving and there are a couple of short hills where I end up walking.
I cannot tell whether I am simply unfit and need to push through, or whether the bike is making this much harder than it needs to be.

As someone who did exactly this: the fitness component is real, and it arrives faster than you expect if the bike is not fighting you.
The order I would work through:
If all of that is done and it is still hard, then it is fitness, and three weeks of riding four days a week will change it noticeably.
