Objects wear out faster the more you use them, so why does the body get stronger?

I accept that exercise is good for you and I would like to understand the mechanism, because on the face of it, it seems to work against how things usually behave.

A pair of shoes worn every day wears out; the same pair worn once a month lasts for years. A machine run constantly needs more maintenance. Use damages things.

The body appears to invert this: used heavily it improves, and left idle it deteriorates. Living systems are obviously different from shoes, but I would like to know what specifically makes the difference and whether the wear analogy holds anywhere.

    The difference is that a living body is not a fixed object being used up — it is continuously being rebuilt, and the rebuilding is what responds to demand.

    Your tissues are replaced constantly. Bone is dissolved and rebuilt, muscle proteins are broken down and resynthesised, blood vessels are remodelled. The relevant question for a living structure is not how much use it has had, but what instructions the rebuilding process is receiving.

    And the instructions come from load. A bone under repeated stress is rebuilt denser along the lines of stress. A muscle repeatedly asked for force is rebuilt with more contractile protein. A heart repeatedly asked for output gets better at producing it.

    A shoe has no such process. It is manufactured once and then only degrades. If shoes continuously replaced their own material in response to use, they would get thicker where you walk hardest, and the analogy would run the other way.

    The other half is that the body's default is not "maintain", it is "maintain what is needed" — and maintenance is expensive.

    Muscle is metabolically costly to keep. Bone density costs minerals. A large heart and dense capillary networks cost energy. From the body's point of view, keeping capacity that is never used is waste, and it disposes of it.

    That is why disuse is actively harmful rather than merely neutral. Bed rest produces measurable losses in bone density and muscle mass within weeks. Nothing is wearing out; the body is removing capacity it has concluded is unnecessary.

    So the correct framing is that exercise is not a benefit added on top of a baseline. Being sedentary is the intervention, and its cost is the loss of what would otherwise be maintained.

    There is a nice everyday demonstration of the principle: the racket arm of a lifelong tennis player has measurably denser bone than the other arm.

    Same person, same genetics, same diet, same age. The only variable is decades of load on one side. It is about as clean a natural experiment as you get, and it shows the adaptation is local and driven by mechanical demand rather than by anything systemic.

    Your wear analogy is not entirely wrong, though, and knowing where it holds is genuinely useful.

    It holds when the load exceeds the rate of repair. That is exactly what an overuse injury is. Tendons, cartilage and bone all remodel much more slowly than muscle, so a training load that muscles adapt to happily can outrun what a tendon can rebuild — which is why so many injuries in new runners and lifters appear a few weeks in, once the muscles have improved enough to let them do more than their connective tissue is ready for.

    It holds for tissues with little or no repair capacity. Some structures do accumulate wear over a lifetime.

    So the useful shape of the rule is: use drives adaptation up to the limit of the repair rate, and becomes damage beyond it. Almost everything in sensible training design — progression rates, rest days, deload weeks — is an attempt to stay on the right side of that line.
